The New Reality
The pandemic triggered a shift in terms of where work is performed and how people interact and communicate with each other in the process. Recent research found that the shift from office-based to more virtual and remote working has contributed to a sense of isolation for many people. Additionally, a lack of feedback about performance and the absence of information about what was happening in the broader organization can increase frustration levels.
A second major trend impacting our New Reality is a transition that was underway previously, but has accelerated in conjunction with pandemic. It is the transition away from the multilayered, organizational model of the past to a flattened structure that is skill and knowledge based and fits more comfortably in the digital/virtual world.
Although this flatter model has many economic advantages, it brings its own set of challenges and frustrations due to the initial blurring or overlapping of roles and accountabilities, and the need for people to renegotiate the basic “rules of engagement” to match the New Reality.
